Description:
Talk about a rough patch of time, this fellow has definitely had his fair share. When we found him in March, 2012, this fellow hobbled right up to our vehicle with a look of "Help me please" upon his face. We noticed a fresh gun shot wound to his chest with an exit wound at his left shoulder. The same leg was badly infected but seemed to far progressed to have been caused by a recent injury. Our first thoughts were that this dog had very little chance at survival. Upon examination, our vet determined that the bullet had entered at an angle, missing any vital organs or bones, and exited through the muscle in his shoulder while not causing too much damage. What are the chances that you'd get shot in the chest and not suffer major injury? But this positive news didn't mean this dog was out of the woods just yet. The vet also noticed that this dog's left front leg would not bend. A closer exam revealed severe trauma to the knee cap, most likely caused by being struck very hard with something like a baseball bat or similar object. This older injury rendered the leg useless and caused the massive amount of infection. Left unattended for much longer, this infection would have eventually caused death. What are the chances that you'd survive a gun shot only to face death from the infection of an unrelated injury?
But as it turns out, this dog had been given all the right chances, so we named him Chance. He did have to have his left front leg amputated but has fully recovered from his surgery and the infection has been cleared. Chance now walks with a little bit of a hobble, as can be expected, but runs as if he has four on the floor! Chance has adapted very well and very quickly in his new life as a three-legged dog. And not only does he get around very well, he does it all with a big smile and friendly countenance. Chance has preformed very well with his house training and will make a great indoor dog. He has not been destructive and responds very well to commands. When accompanying his humans outdoors, he normally likes to stay close by but will do a little exploring from time to time, still staying within eye sight of his humans. Still, a home with a fenced area would be best for those times that Chance is going to be outdoors. While Chance gets along great with most all dogs, he seems to enjoy playing with those in his own size range much more. We have noticed that Chance seems to get very tense around male dogs that are intact but is fine around those that have been neutered. Chance exhibits his gratitude and love everyday. His ever present smile lets you know he appreciates the new chance at life he has. Chance just seems to be happy knowing that someone cares about him. While in the care of SoCo, Chance has also been neutered, received all of his yearly vaccines and tested negative for heart worm (he's also been on a monthly heart worm preventative) So what are the chances that you're looking for a friendly, large sized dog? What are the chances that this once homeless, beaten and shot dog could find his forever home with you? Email Scott at socorescue@yahoo.com if your ready to take a Chance.
